Helene Richter, who later became an English scholar and theater scholar, received private lessons together with her sister Elise Richter in their father's house, as schoolgirls were not yet allowed to attend grammar school. She continued her education through self-taught studies and lectures at the University of Vienna. She became a well-known publicist, theater critic and historian and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Heidelberg.

In 1942, she and her sister Elise Richter were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto, where they both died.

She was honored in 1998 by the naming of one of the "Gates of Remembrance" on the campus of the University of Vienna together with her sister (Richter Gate, passageway to Garnisongasse).
